Audience Effects Theory

  1) Write a definition of a   passive  audience:    This is the view that the audience take information from the media that has the same effect on everyone. 2)  Write a definition of an  active  audience:  This is a more modern and generally accepted view that audiences interact with the media they consume 3) Write a definition of the  hypodermic needle  theory:  The suggestion that audiences are always passive and therefore take the intended message of the producer as if it were injected in to their minds. This theory assumes no individual difference in audience members 4) Write down a  media product  for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and  WHY  it fits that particular audience use/gratification:  Information/Surveillance:   BBC News is a British free-to-air television news channel.   1) What is the preferred reading of a media text?   Preferred Reading is read in the way in which the producer intends to be decoded. Audiences agree with messages and ideologies which would show that the producer has been successful.              2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text? Oppositional reading is when audiences completely reject the producers messages and create their own reading. This is bad for producers as audiences do not support them. 3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?  The Harry Brown trailer positions the teenagers as reckless because they are hurting and causing trouble around the estate. It also shows that the teenagers are low income children and come from working class families. 4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of this trailer? This is because they might think that these are the kind of people they are seen as in society. In

Camerawork and Editing

CAMERA SHOTS Extreme wide shot/ Establishing shot: This shot is used to show the comparison of  actors to the landscape/ environment. Actors aren't always needed in a wide shot and can sometimes only show the location to show the whole setting Wide shot/ Full shot: This shot shows the correlation between the subject and the background. We can see the actor head to toe and get a sense of the area/ setting around them. It can be used in many ways. e.g. to convey loneliness/ isolation Medium full shot: This is halfway between a full shot and a medium full shot. It usually cuts off by the knees or somewhere around the waist. The actor and setting are roughly equal in frame.  Medium shot: This shot frames the actor right above the waist to allow the actor to be seen interacting with other objects/ props or the environment surrounding them.  Medium close-up: This is halfway between a medium and a close-up shot. It is from the chest up and is sometimes called a bust shot to put emphasis

Q1)1 Q2)1 Q3)2 Q4)2 Q5)1 Q6)2 Q7)1 Q8)3 Q9)2 The reason that I didn't get full marks on the longer questions is that I didn't elaborate enough when it came to description. I did better on Q4 because I revised the media terminology an the meaning of the phrase 'Target Audience' I need to work on Q9 because I didn't fully understand the text and what I had to portray. Q9) This is because the target audience are older men and women, most likely the resigned and parents. This shows that the consumers feel remorse for the child and know how it feels since they may have children of their own. Therefore they will donate money to charity. The producers use controversial and emotive images to endorse their charity. The reason for using a malnourished child in the advert is because children are often associated with innocence and vulnerability.  1. Consider the effect of placement (connotations) 2. Further detail for extended questions   (Q9) 1) The effect of placement on t

Drama, Fantasy and Horror 3) Choose  THREE  aspects of mise-en-scene (e.g. costume, lighting, setting) and write a short paragraph for  each  about the  denotation  and  connotation  in the opening 8 minutes of Stranger Things. What is being communicated to the audience? How does the mise-en-scene help to communicate the genre of Stranger Things? The man in the beginning of the video is wearing a lab coat which illustrates the fact that he is a form of scientist. He is also waiting outside an elevator with a flickering light this could denote that he is in an institution of some sort which is not well funded or state of the art. In addition the scientist is in some sort of hurry which could show that he is distressed and there is a problem. The kids are all in a cramped basement which could suggest that they are on a low budget income
