Audience Effects Theory

 1) Write a definition of a passive audience:

This is the view that the audience take information from the media that has the same effect on everyone.

2) Write a definition of an active audience:

This is a more modern and generally accepted view that audiences interact with the media they consume

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:

The suggestion that audiences are always passive and therefore take the intended message of the producer as if it were injected in to their minds. This theory assumes no individual difference in audience members

4) Write down a media product for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification:

Information/Surveillance:  BBC News is a British free-to-air television news channel. It provides information and current news about what is going on in Britain and around the world. BBC News fits this category because it provides new information you would have not yet known.

Identity: Ackley Bridge is a series which follows the lives of people affected by a merger of two schools in a largely segregated British and Asian community. Filled with thought-provoking topics of racism, poverty, bullying, sexuality and violence. This fits the Identity category because there are certain members of audiences who can relate to some of the characters experiences .

Diversion/Entertainment:  Sword Art Online: This anime series features a virtual reality massively multiplayer online role-playing game. The game allows people to control their in-game characters with their minds when using a Nerve Gear helmet. This series is linked to this category because some audiences would want to have a change and divert from their original lives.

Relationships: Love Island is a show where a group of men and women participate in a series of tasks with a partner that they keep swapping until they meet the love of their life. This series fits this category because audiences will want to feel attached to a person or people in the show.
